The Cherokee Tribe

Lifestyle:

Villages were located near a river or other water source.  The Cherokee had two different syles of housing.  The first is a rectangular summer house.  It consits of clay plaster, gabled bark or trench roofs. (Native Americans 534)  The winter house was in a circular form, to keep warm air in.  (Native Americans 534)

Relationships with other tribes:

  • Historians believed that they were related to the Iroquis.  

  • It was forbidden to marry outside of the cherokee tribe

Relationships with Explorers:

  • Hernando de Soto entured into the cherokee land in 1540.  This changed how the cherokees lived forever.

  • Europeans brought many diseses

  • Within the first two centeries of contact with the English, 95% of the population died due to enslaved indians and battles between English and Indians.

Location:

The Cherokee Indians were most likely origniated in the upper Ohio valley. (Native Americans 530) The Cherokee were located in South eastern America. ("William A. Darity) "70 and 100 precontact villages were located in roughly 40,000 square miles of the southern Appalachian region." (Native Americans 530)

Goverment/ Culture:

The cherokee tribe had two chiefs for each village: a war chief and a white chief.

The two chifes were involved in civil, economic, and religious functions.  Chiefs could be female or male, there was no hereditary envolvment.  (Native Americans 533) Women traditionally were the owners of the property, portraying equal gender rights. (William A. Darity)
